What’s On Tap This Weekend: New Glarus Brewing Company Octoberfest

As you know, I am on an never-ending quest to try new brews and discover new breweries. If I had a hat, a whip and a little Japanese boy sidekick, I would be Indiana Jones or some weird East German Dominatrix: of course both would be a good time, but I think I am closer to the former. While I have had many of the brews from this week’s brewery, I have not had the pleasure of trying their Octoberfest. And upon first sip, I knew it had to be featured. This week, one of my new favorite Octoberfest märzen lagers, New Glarus Staghorn Octoberfest, is What’s on Tap!

New Glarus Brewing Company, located in New Glarus, Wisconsin, is one of the best Midwest breweries in the United States. And when the owner, Deb Carey, isn’t hanging with President Obama, she is making some damn good beer (P.S. Regardless of political affiliation, how great is it that a brewery owner was part of a small business group that met with Obama? If more beer people ran the world, more problems would be solved because we’d be too drunk to care!). Since 1993, New Glarus has been making award-winning brews like Belgian Red and this week’s brew Staghorn Octoberfest.

Staghorn is an Octoberfest-style brew that might be the most drinkable Octoberfest-style brew on the market. Staghorn has a sweet, malty smell which combines with a very slight hoppy bitterness and citrus flavors. The best aspect about this brew is it’s not overly sweet, a trait of many Oktoberfest beers. Simply, I cannot get enough.

As with anything made from Wisconsin you better drink this drink with cheese. But if a block of Wisconsin cheddar doesn’t fill you, up throw some meat on the grill. Given the brew’s label, you cannot go wrong paring the brew with any animal you have to kill to grill. This weekend, pick-up some Staghorn and say hello to your new favorite beer.
