Nowadays, Guitar Hero is a game you’re embarrassed you wasted a solid chunk of the previous decade perfecting. But before that, there were real guitar heroes — masters of their instruments. And Stevie Ray Vaughan stands as a blues shredding icon to both older generations of guitar aficionados and new wannabe guitarists rediscovering his music every day.
Not only considered one of the best blues players of all time — a lefty like Hendrix — he also led a true rock’n’roll lifestyle, spending much of his most heralded days in an intoxicated haze. Then, just a few short years after cleaning up, he died in a helicopter crash in 1990. I guess there’s a moral in there, though I’m not quite sure what it is.
On October 3rd, 1991, former Texas Governor Ann Richards proclaimed October 3rd “Stevie Ray Vaughan Day” in the State Of Texas in honor of Stevie’s birth. And while he’s no longer with us, we’ll always have his music and these rare photos of him to remember SRV by.
