Rum, Tequila, and Whiskey – OH MY! This week are honored to test and review some amazing spirits you’ve probably never heard of, such as: Artá Tequila, Crown Royal Black, and Cruzan 9 rum. Now that you’ve heard of them, it’s time for us to tell you how they rank. So, shut up, sit down, and enjoy!
Artá Tequia – Blanco
Founded in 2008 by David Fox and Tony Cordova, Artá Tequila is a new line of small batch ultra premium tequilas that come from 100% agave!
This clear (blanco) tequila is actually green, and here’s what I mean… Artá’s glass bottles are manufactured using recycled glass with a refurbished metal bottle top and a sustainably harvested cork from Portugal. Perfect for tequila loving hippies, Artá aims to quench your thirst and save the earth all in one little triangle bottle.
Proof: 80 (40% ABV)
Flavors: Agave and spices
Taste: A (Excellent)
Mix-ability: A- (Great)
Buzz Factor: B+ (Very Good)

Overall: We give Artá Tequila Blanco an A-. Their motto: “Artá Tequila – the art of tequila.” We agree, class up your next party with a bottle of ARTA Blanco, you won’t be sorry!
Mix it up with – “The Cactus Puncher”
Ingredients: 1.5 oz. Artá Blanco Tequila, 1/2 oz. Triple Sec, 1 oz. Grenadine, 2 oz. Orange Juice, 1 oz. Lime Juice.
Directions: Add ingredients. Shake well with ice. Pour into a chilled highball glass.
Crown Royal Black
Last week we reviewed Crown Royal, this week CR’s darker, more flavorful big brother is here to up-stage and flex its muscle. Just launched in April of 2010 Crown Royal Black is hand crafted by master blender Anderw MacKay.
What makes Crown Royal Black so different? It’s the color and the more robust taste, that comes from the charred oak barrels from which it’s aged in. We sipped, mixed, and tested CR Black until the bottle was empty, now it’s time for our review. Without further adieu, here you go!
Proof: 90 (45% ABV)
Flavors: Sherry, cinnamon, maple
Taste: B (Good)
Mix-ability: B (Good) Excellent on the rocks, or with water!
Buzz Factor: A (Excellent)

Overall: We give Crown Royal Black a A-. Delicious and flavorful, well worth the price!
Mix it up with – “The Maple Leaf”
Ingredients: 2 oz Crown Royal Black, 1/2 oz maple syrup, splash of soda.
Directions: Pour Crown Royal Black and maple syrup into a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake well. Strain into an old-fashioned glass filled with ice. Add a splash of club soda.
Cruzan 9 Spiced Rum
Straight from the US Virgin Islands, Cruzan 9 is infused with nine distinct spices, including: vanilla, nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, mace, allspice, pepper and juniper berry. All these spices give Cruzan 9 a distinct flavor and wonderful kick!
As the winner of a bronze medal in the 2010 San Francisco World Spirits Competition and the the latest rum to join the Cruzan family we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to full test and review this bold Caribbean rum. The testing is done, the verdict is in, now here’s our review…
Proof: 80 (40% ABV)
Age: Blended – minimum of 14 months and up to 12 years.
Flavors: Cinnamon, vanilla, nutmeg, warm spices
Taste: B+ (Very Good)
Mix-ability: B+ (Very Good)
Buzz Factor: C+ (Above Average)
Price: $15.99 USD (750ml)
Overall: We give Cruzan 9 Spiced Rum a B+. Great to mix or have on the rocks year-round.
Mix it up with – “The Nova 9”
Ingredients: 1 part Cruzan Light, 1 part Cruzan 9, 5 part DeKuyper Apricot Brandy, 1 part fresh lemon sour, 3 parts pineapple juice
Directions: Shake all ingredients with ice and pour into a hurricane glass. Garnish with a pineapple wedge and a dusting of fresh ground nutmeg.
