As the NBA season hits December, a lot of highly anticipated storylines are beginning to play out. Simply put, nothing is bigger than LeBron‘s first trip back to the city that he shat on when tonight’s theater of vengeance unfolds on TNT. LeBron brings his underwhelming 11-8 Miami Heat to his former kingdom where Cavs owner Dan Gilbert will finally get to see his rabid fan base pounce on the One that turned his back on his hometown.
Aside from LeBrocalypse Now, the big stories from the past week include the recent four game losing streak by the Lakers, Dallas and Utah climbing up the Western standings, and the rejuvenated Knicks winning seven of their last eight. The Clippers‘ Blake Griffin and the Knicks‘ Landry Fields were named Western and Eastern Conference Rookies of the Month, respectively, and the Pistons have received interest from investors in Abu Dhabi and Qatar to buy the team. What a crazy week!
This week’s player spotlights will focus on Oklahoma City‘s Russell Westbrook and Minnesota‘s Darko Milicic. Westbrook has been sick nasty this week, averaging nearly 30 points, 10 assists, 7 rebounds, and 3 steals per game as he has crept into the top five in the NBA in scoring and is battling his buddy, Kevin Durant, for a stake in the MVP race. The comic figure Darko has been a surprise this season, leading the NBA in blocked shots and just finished a week averaging 17 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 blocks per game. Not too shabby for the guy who was picked by Detroit ahead of Carmelo Anthony, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Chris Kaman, Kirk Hinri…..okay, we all get the point.
What to watch for this weekend in the NBA is obviously headlined by tonight’s battle in Cleveland. This weekend you can catch two great games on ESPN Friday Night when Chicago heads to Boston and Dallas invades Utah. Sunday night features Chris Paul versus Tony Parker as the Hornets and Spurs duke it out for a top spot in the West.
