Whatever the reason or scenario leading up to your vacation, there is one thing for sure. You do not want to waste any time at all. Sadly, there is a beast that tends to nag almost everyone’s vacation. In some cases it may be your wife, that friend that never has enough money, or nature paying your girlfriend a rather timely visit. Those issues can all be handled with a sufficient amount of booze; the beast in question will just feed off of liquor. I’m talking about the buzz kill of all buzz kills — jet lag.
Worry not faithful traveler! We have put our interns to the test and devised a few methods that will help you beat the vacation stealer known as jet lag!
1. You are WHEN you eat
This trick will be a little difficult for those in the working world, but if you can pull it off it works like a charm. A few days prior to your vacation start eating your meals when you likely would at your destination. This way you can fool your body into thinking you are already there. If only that were true…
2. Save the Partying for the Vacation
It can be tempting to go out and party prior to leaving for a vacation. Whether you are finishing up finals or just ready to take a break from work, starting the party early is a natural desire. The resulting hangover combined with the lack of sleep will catch up with you when you least want it to—on your vacation.
Stay home. You are going on vacation to party so get a good night’s rest before going crazy in Cabo, Cancun, Amsterdam, Jamaica, or wherever you are going. After all, that is why you are spending a few hundred dollars just to get there.
What? I’m on vacation, man! I’m not sleeping, it’s party time!
Sleep on the plane, numskull. Forget paying too much for drinks and not even being able to hit on the hot chick you saw up in first class. Get some sleep on the plane and feel rested when you touch down at your destination. Better rested does not only mean better tested, but better party too (so it doesn’t rhyme).
4. Treat it like a Workout
Drinking water on the plane can actually help you quite a bit. Getting dehydrated helps bring on the symptoms of jet lag. Stretching helps keep your body from cramping up and getting uncomfortable too. Going hours with a pinch in your neck or back will wear you down not only physically, but mentally too. If you are really ambitious, you can even do a few yoga moves.
5. Catch some Rays
If you are traveling to the beach this one should be easy. Spending some time in the sun can help perk you up and make you feel a bit more alert. If you happen to be unlucky and the rain Gods are keeping you from your beach skip on the dimly lit club and hang out where it is well-lit and you will get the same effect.
