Authorities say that eight people have been slain in Mississippi, including a sheriff’s deputy. Cory Godbolt has been taken into custody and is currently the prime suspect in the shooting.
According to the Daily Ledger, a Lincoln County deputy was sent to a residence on Lee Drive in Bogue Chitto to hear the pleas of a resident who wished that the suspect Godbolt would leave the property. When the officer arrived at the home, that’s when the shooting occurred which resulted in the death of four people.
Goldbolt fled police after the shooting. He allegedly killed the victims at three different residences in the area, leaving his mark of death last night on Lincoln County. One home is in Bogue Chitto, while the two other homes are in Brookhaven. The suspect told The Clarion-Ledger that he “did it” because of the love he has for his wife, children, and Bogue Chitto.
Mississippi Bureau of Investigation spokesman Warren Strain said that charges have still not been filed against the suspect. Strain also suggested that it would be “premature” to talk about the motive.
The suspect shared his opinions with the Daily Ledger. “I ain’t fit to live, not after what I done,” said Godbolt in a video of the arrest.
Godbolt claims that he was speaking with his wife and members of her family when someone called the police. “I was having a conversation with her stepdaddy and her mama and her, my wife, about me taking my children home,” says the suspect on the Daily Ledger’s video. “Somebody called the officer, people that didn’t even live at the house. That’s what they do. They intervene.”
The Lincoln County man said that he did not plan on police capturing him alive. “My intentions was to have God kill me. I ran out of bullets,” he said. “Suicide by cop was my intention.“
Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant issued a statement about the incident, requesting residents pray for the families of the fallen and pay respect to those in law enforcement who “sacrifice” their lives everyday in an attempt to keep communities and neighborhood safe.
“Every day, the men and women who wear the badge make some measure of sacrifice to protect and serve their communities,” Bryant said. “Too often, we lose one of our finest. I thank the law enforcement agencies involved for their hard work.”
The slain sheriff’s deputy has been identified as 36-year-old William Durr. He had been employed by the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office for two years. He had also previously worked in the Brookhaven Police Department for four years.
Two victims of the multiple murders include two boys. Their bodies were found in the second home from last night’s house-to-house killing spree. The bodies of a man and a woman were discovered at the third home that has turned into a Mississippi crime scene. There identities have not been released to the public.
Bogue Chitto resident Cory Godbolt has confessed to killing all eight people. He wanted to die by a hail of gunfire.
