Given his versatility growing up as an exceptional football, basketball, and baseball player, it was no surprise that both baseball experts and Jones’ initial team (Seattle Mariners) were undecided on whether he should play the field or pitch. Ultimately, Jones wanted to be an everyday player in the field so the Mariners made Jones a shortstop of their rookie league affiliate. While Jones spent several years as a minor league shortstop, the Mariners eventually asked Jones if he would move to the outfield, which he readily agreed to do.
After three years in the minor leagues, Jones was called up by the Mariners on July 14, 2006. Jones replaced corner outfielder Shin-Soo Choo, whose performance at the position was less than impressive. Although Jones struggled at the plate initially (went 0-12 at the plate) he eventually got his first hit against the New York Yankees four days later. Despite being a solid hitter, Jones, along with several minor league players, were traded to the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for starting pitcher Erik Bedard. The trade took place on February 8, 2008
Nearly six months later, Jones became just the second player to hit a triple and a grand slam in the same game as a visitor of Yankee Stadium. In his first year with the Orioles, Jones excelled as a hitter, base stealer, and defender (.270 BA, 9 HR’s, 57 RBIs, and 10 stolen bases).
During the 2009 season, Jones continued to improve as both a contact hitter and vigilant defender. As a result of his impressive consistency, Jones was selected to attend his first All-Star game. Although Jones sprained his ankle in August and missed the rest of the season, it was undeniable the impact Jones had as a respected leader and as a proficient baseball player. Aside from increasing all of his offensive numbers, Jones tied for fifth among major league center fielders for most outfield assists at nine. Jones’ defensive prowess was eventually rewarded in November when he won the Golden Glove Award.
Year after year, Jones continued to step up his game on both offense and defense. Although the Orioles were still struggling as a team in 2010, Jones again improved his batting average from last year (.284 BA) along with 19 home runs and 69 RBIs. More importantly, Jones continued to make a name for himself as a defensive asset as he was second in the majors with 12 outfield assists.
Statistically speaking, 2011 was a year to remember for Jones. He set career highs in home runs (25), RBIs (83), Stolen bases (12) and slugging percentage (.466).
The 2012 season was a year that both Adam Jones and the Orioles fanbase remember as a year to rejoice. Not only did Jones sign a massive six-year extension worth $85.5 million, the Orioles finally made the playoffs for the first time in 15 years. During the season, Jones set career highs in home runs (32), runs scored (103), stolen bases (16), batting average (.287), and slugging percentage (.505).

2013 – 2015

Before the start of the 2013 season, Jones was selected to participate in the 2013 World Baseball Classic by the United States national team. Offensively, Jones was simply electrifying to watch as he knocked in 108 RBIs and 33 home runs during the regular season. Although Jones had a sub-par on-base percentage of .318 and the Orioles missed the playoffs, it was once again a testament to Jones’ continuing commitment to being the best player he could be.
Finally, after being an ample contributor to the Baltimore Orioles for several years, Jones was rewarded for his efforts by his team making the playoffs and going to the ALCS. Although the Orioles were ultimately swept by the Kansas City Royals, it was immensely rewarding to witness Jones and the Orioles make a serious push to becoming a legitimate World Series contender.
2015 proved to be somewhat of a down year for both the Orioles and Jones. While he made his fifth All-Star game, the Orioles finished with a record of 81-81 and Jones only played in 137 games, his lowest total since 2009.

While Jones struggled initially during the 2016 season after hitting just .224 in April, manager Buck Showalter made an intriguing move by allowing Jones to hit first in the lineup. The week after the move, Jones garnered 13 hits, four home runs, nine RBIs and hit a .520 batting average. Jones also passed Brady Anderson for sixth all-time on the home run list for the Orioles at 210.
Thus far during the 2017 season, Jones has continued to be the reliable player that he has been since he joined the Orioles. His batting average currently stands at .284 and he also has a solid on-base percentage of .342
While it is hard to be consistently great in any sport, to excel in baseball over the course of a 162-game season is particularly arduous. However, Adam Jones has made it look routine in terms of maintaining his concentration at the plate while being aggressive in the outfield. Even when he has been off his game, his supreme confidence and natural talent as an athlete have allowed him to overcome adversity more effectively than most. If Jones can maintain his unbreakable mentality, a World Series championship seems inevitable.
