But how did Ja Rule get here?
1999 – 2002
In 1999, Atkins released his debut album, Venni Vetti Vecci, which went on to hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. The record sold 2 million copies worldwide, with Atkins earning an estimated $2.37 million.
One year later, he would release Rule 3:36, which sold more than 4 million copies worldwide and also hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and Top R&B/Hip-Hop charts. His biggest singles include “Holla Holla”, “Between Me and You”, “I’m Real (Murder Remix)”, “Ain’t It Funny”, “Always on Time”, “Mesmerize”, and “Wonderful.” Atkins reportedly earned $4.8 million for this album.
In 2001, he released Pain is Love, which sold 6 million copies worldwide and was certified 3x Platinum. In 2002, he released The Last Temptation, which sold 1.5 million copies in the U.S. That same year, he also had a small role in The Fast and the Furious. In 2002, he starred alongside Steven Segal in Half Past Dead.

Atkins would go on to release three more studio albums over the ensuing years as well as continue his acting career. In 2003, he had a small role in Scary Movie 3. In 2005, he appeared in Assault on Precinct 13.
However, in 2011 he was sentenced to 28 months in prison for tax evasion and gun charges after failing to pay taxes on more than $3 million in earnings between 2004 and 2006. He was released early from state prison on May 7, 2013.
Shortly before that, Atkins managed to release a new album in 2012, Pain is Love 2, which was his first since 2004’s R.U.L.E. It was his first album away from his previous label Def Jam and only sold 3,200 unites in its first week, landing at No. 145 for that span.
2014 – Present
Rule is currently working on his eighth studio album, Coup de Grace. It is expected to be released sometime in 2017.
Overall, his seven studio albums have sold more than 30 million copies since 1999.
