We’ve got a highly intriguing game on the MLB Network tonight, as the Chicago Cubs (12-9) are set to kick off a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox (11-10) in Fenway Park. This is exactly the kind of matchup that makes me love interleague play, and all of you old school purists can go pound sand. It’s going to be awesome getting to see these two iconic franchises duke it out on the diamond.
Toeing the bump for the Cubs will be Jake Arrieta. The 2015 NL Cy Young Award winner is off to a strong start this season, as he’s gone 3-0 in four outings with a 3.65 ERA and 1.01 WHIP while striking out 29 batters over 24.2 innings. The 31-year-old righty doesn’t have a great track record against Boston, going 1-3 in six starts (seven appearances) against them with a 4.66 ERA and 1.31 WHIP. But that doesn’t really mean a damn thing since Arrieta transformed into a totally different pitcher after my beloved Orioles made the boneheaded move of trading him to the Cubs. And yes, I’m still extremely salty about it.
For the Red Sox, southpaw Drew Pomeranz will look to stymie Chicago’s dangerous bats. Pomeranz was dealt from San Diego to Boston at last year’s trade deadline, and it seems like he’s still trying to adjust to life in the AL East. In 2016, Pomeranz posted a 2.47 ERA and 1.06 WHIP over 17 starts with the Padres and a 4.59 ERA and 1.37 WHIP over 13 starts (14 appearances) with Boston. It’s been more of the same for the 28-year-old this season, as he’s gone 1-1 in three starts with a 4.60 ERA.
Now that we’ve examined the pitching matchup, let’s breakdown all of the different ways you can watch Chicago take on Boston.
