Maggie Nichols, the 19-year-old gymnast from Minnesota, earned herself an NCAA Championship for the uneven bars competition. But she wasn’t the only Sooner to win an individual championship during that two-day competition. Nicole Lehrmann also won the uneven bars competition, and walked away as NCAA Champion.
Oklahoma Sooners Women’s Gymnastics Team History
The Oklahoma Sooners Women’s Gymnastics team was founded in 1981. They are seven-time NCAA Regional Champions (2006, 2010-2015). They are 13-time Conference Champions (1984-1986, 1991, 1993, 2004, 2008-2010, 2012-2015).
The Sooners have made five Super Six appearances (2010, 2011, 2013-2015). This team has competed in the NCAA Gymnastics Tournament 15 times (1985, 1989, 2001, 2004-2015).
On Saturday, April 15, 2017, the Sooners placed yet another NCAA Championship upon their mantle of gold.
This is the third time that the Oklahoma Sooners Women’s Gymnastics team have won the NCAA Championship. The Sooners first won the tournament in 2014. They would repeat this feat in 2016 and then again in 2017 (consecutively).
In 2014, Taylor Spears earned herself an NCAA Championship for the balance beam competition. Similarly, Maggie Nichols and Nicole Lehrmann both earned themselves a championship for competing in an individual competition (uneven bars).
