Why Is Nintendo 64 The Best Console Of All Time? Explained

In the world we live in, we often forget about how the things we own have evolved over time. Whether you’re playing your Xbox One or PlayStation 4 and seeing the amazing graphics on Horizon: Zero Dawn¬†or pulling the trigger in Call of Duty and feeling the vibration in your hands, consoles have come a long way since the Atari 2600 was first released. One of the best consoles to hit the market since then is the Nintendo 64.

The Nintendo 64 was released in 1996 and was a big step forward for home video game consoles. Here are the three main reasons why it is the greatest console of all time.

Features

One of the features that the Nintendo 64 introduced after it was released was the Rumble Pak. The Rumble Pak would insert into the back of the controller and allow vibration to be used in its games. This made the game feel more realistic in terms of holding a weapon or having the room shake, allowing gamers to feel immersed in the experience.

The thing that is always discussed in conversation about the Nintendo 64 is the weird controller. They had the normal buttons but they also had three different handles for where you could put your hands. You may think that this was a crazy idea but there was some logic behind it. Nintendo wanted the controller to have three handles so you can grip the controller any way that you feel comfortable. This feature ended up helping the development of the Nintendo Switch with its different ways to strategize.

Graphics

Every game that came before the Nintendo 64 didn’t support 3D graphics, but that changed when the 64 was released. The 64 was the first system to have 3D graphics built into their games. The 3D graphics added more depth to the games and that was groundbreaking for the time period. We look at the graphics we have today and you can’t believe how amazing the games look, and that all started with the Nintendo 64.

Games

The main reason that the Nintendo 64 is the best console of all time is because of their games. My favorite game was Super Mario 64. Being able to jump into the different worlds and run around the Mushroom Kingdom was amazing. Mario Kart 64 was a big hit for the console because of its multiplayer options.

The one notable game for this system that sets it apart from any other is The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. This game is considered to be the best game of all time. It set the standard for 3D action-adventure games.

One last major game that came out for it was GoldenEye 007, which was based on the movie of the same name. Just like Zelda, this game set the bar for its genre, first-person shooter, and helped pave the way for the first-person shooters we play today like Call of Duty and Halo.

While many don’t consider the Nintendo 64 to be the greatest console of all time, the games and features that were on this console helped pave the way for the amazing games that we have right now. If it hadn’t been for the Nintendo 64, we may not have the rumble feature in our controllers and games like Call of Duty or Halo might be totally different because they didn’t have GoldenEye 007 to look at. We may not have great action-adventure games like we had in Ocarina of Time. The Nintendo 64 was the first console to lay down the blueprint for what it takes to make great games that you can play for hours and hours and still feel the excitement you had when you first put the cartridge in.
