The 12-team field is down to just two, as #6 Kent State will take on #1 Akron in the championship game of the MAC Tournament. The winner of tonight’s game will earn an automatic bid to the 2017 NCAA Tournament, so the stakes couldn’t possibly be any higher.
The Kent State Golden Flashes have already had one helluva run just to get to the finals. They beat #11 Central Michigan 116-106 (OT) in the first round, #3 Buffalo 68-65 in the quarterfinals, and #2 Ohio 68-66 in the semifinals.
On the other side of the bracket, Akron’s road to the championship game has been much easier. The regular season MAC champs were awarded a first round bye, so they’ve only needed to win two games to reach the finals. The Zips knocked off #8 Eastern Michigan 79-62 in the quarterfinals and #4 Ball State 74-70 in the semifinals to book their spot in the championship.
This will be the third meeting between Kent State and Akron this season, making tonight’s game one gigantic rubber match. Kent State won the first game, picking up a 70-67 road win on February 17. Akron would get revenge on Kent State’s Senior Night, beating them 66-56 on March 3.
Now that you know what to expect in this matchup, let’s breakdown all of the different ways you can watch the 2017 MAC Tournament championship game.
