Amazon Has Sold Out Of George Orwell’s ‘1984,’ What A Coincidence!

Amazon Sells Out Of George Orwell’s ‘1984’: Full Story

via Amazon

I want everyone to understand the true scope of Amazon running out of copies of 1984 to sell. Amazon is a company that has done over $100 billion in sales in 2015 at the time of this article’s writing. Amazon is a company whose revenue grows 20% every year. Amazon is currently worth almost $300 billion dollars. Amazon, if you remember (#TBT), started as an online bookstore. The the fact that this company of all companies could run out of this book, one of the most famous of all time, is truly preposterous.

George Orwell’s dystopian classic 1984 occupied the number one spot on Amazon’s best-selling books list yesterday, where it remains today. A cautionary tale about a brutal, amoral dictator has evidently felt relevant to people lately. But as of today, Amazon—the world’s largest bookseller—is unable to keep up with demand.

Currently 1984 is printed by Signet Classics, and both the hardcover and softcover versions are listed as “temporarily out of stock.” As CNN reported yesterday, Penguin (the parent company of the New American Library, Signet’s parent company) is racing to print more copies of Orwell’s novel.
Truly remarkable. I can’t imagine why all of a sudden Amazon would sell out of this classic novel. Any guesses?
