France is a very open place–everyone knows this. The idea of nudity, being free with your body, or whatever else you want to call it is a much stronger ideal over there than it is here in the United States. So when we learned that a class of 17 and 18-year-old students posed naked for a picture, we weren’t that surprised. Then we learned that their teachers joined in. Then we learned that the picture was actually for the yearbook. That’s when we were blown away.
So who are these students? They’re the science and technology class STD2A at the Lycee Federic Mistral high school in Avignon.
In truth, there’s nothing inherently wrong with what’s going on in the picture. Some of the students who didn’t want to take off their clothes are wearing black. The students who wanted to go for it all are holding censor placecards over their “important” parts. Keep in mind that these are the same French kids who’ve been smoking cigarettes since they were 14 and drinking wine since 13. It’s Europe. I’d be surprised if at least one of these kids wasn’t at least halfway buzzed at the time this picture was taken.
To most people, the biggest question here is that the teacher (man on the right) joined in on the picture. Is that weird? Yes. There’s no question that if this happened in the United States of America (or even England) there would be a special emergency meeting held at 3 AM with all the parents yelling and complaining about getting this guy fired. But this is just typical of France being France. Despite all the bad stuff going on in the world, these students are taking off their clothes for a picture and having some fun.
