Hell of a week for some good Harry Potter-related news. First, we learned that Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them will be five movies instead of three, which is a win for any Potter fan. Then, we found out that they added none other than Johnny Depp to the cast. To make the news even juicier, rumors suggest Depp might be playing Gellert Grindelwald (an evil wizard who is a sort of prequel to Voldemort), which Warner seemingly confirmed with this video.
The first Fantastic Beasts, which comes out in theaters next week, takes place in 1926. In Harry Potter lore, Albus Dumbledore defeated Grindelwald in a duel in 1945, which would put Dumbledore in line for the next film in the franchise.
During the Fantastic Beasts press tour, director David Yates told Screen Rant, “In the second movie Dumbledore comes back. He’s got a couple of good scenes with Newt [Eddie Redmayne]. We’re discussing who would play Dumbledore, any suggestions would be good.”
The connection between the two characters is from when Newt Scamander was expelled from Hogwarts for “endangering human life with a beast,” it was Hogwarts teacher Albus Dumbledore who argued to let him stay.
Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them opens next week, November 18, and its sequel (which will include Dumbledore and Johnny Depp!) arrives November 16, 2018.
