When Haley Smith of Amarillo, Texas got engaged in July of 2015, she experienced some mixed emotions. She was ecstatic to spend the rest of her life with the man of her dreams, but she was extremely disappointed with how she looked in the proposal pictures. From People:
“I saw them and didn’t even recognize myself,” Smith, 24, tells PEOPLE. “I cried because this was one of the happiest moments of my life, but I was just so ashamed. I didn’t understand how Matt could want to be with someone like me. After seeing those, I knew I needed to change.”
The graduate student in psychology decided to make “slow habit changes” to effectively lose weight.

Sometimes I can't believe the picture on the left was actually me. And sometimes I can't believe that the picture on the right is me. It's a weird feeling, but I'm proud of how far I've come. She started with small changes like not eating after 8:00 P.M. and only eating out twice a week. She progressed from there to follow a strict diet and hit the gym frequently for cardio and strength training. In the 15 months between the proposal and the wedding day, Smith dropped an absurd 110 pounds. Here are some more photos of her amazing transformation.

So today I woke up to a new low weight – 165.7. I've been stuck around 168-172 for 2 months. I am posting this to tell y'all that weight loss isn't all predictable. As y'all know, I get married this weekend, so for the last week or two, I've really tried to buckle down! I was giving it my all in workouts (most days – hah), logging food and making healthier choices than usual, but I just couldn't break 168.1. Then Monday and Tuesday, wedding prep got the best of me, so we didn't cook at home, and I had a splurge meal last night. And what do I wake up to? Losing 2.4lbs. It makes no dang sense. So when you are feeling discouraged because there is no progress on the scale, give it time! It's not all about numbers. Cheat meals aren't the answer of course, but trust in the process, keep working and be patient!
This week's #motivationmonday is about tracking your progress by pictures instead of just by the scale. When I first began my journey, I would take progress pictures every two weeks. My body changes more slowly now so I have switched it to once a month. Sometimes the scale just won't budge which can be really discouraging when I'm busting my butt daily, but when I go back to the pictures I took 6 months ago, or even just last month, I feel proud of how hard I've been working. These are my most recent pictures. They motivate me in two big ways. I can see all of the progress I've made, and I can highlight the areas I really want to focus on. It helps me to set goals but also pat myself on the back. So this month try to take some progress pictures either in the mirror or with your accountability partner. So, I finally finished my 21 Day Fix ab challenge from #beachbody. I don't see any abs, but I can definitely feel the difference when I poke em. Haha I'm going to start the program again with some added exercises to keep toning up. I'll update in a few weeks! P.S. #transformationtuesday I've been asked to post my story a couple of times, so here goes. The left picture was on my proposal day on July 18, 2015, and the right was my bridal shower on August 6, 2016. When Matt proposed last year, I saw my pictures and didn't even recognize myself. My whole adult life, I have struggled with my weight, but this was my highest. I had let myself go and didn't even realize how far I had gotten. On that day, I made up my mind to make a change. I was tired of hiding in pictures, getting winded walking across a parking lot, skipping out on activities, feeling lazy, and most of all being embarrassed of myself. No ONE thing made me how I am today. It was a combination of about every health and fitness option I could find. So don't think there's some magic pill, wrap, gym membership, meal, vitamin, app, surgery, diet, workout, waist trainer, book, hypnosis, shake, powder or anything else that will just do it for you. It's finding your own way and using the tools that work for you. It's making the right healthy choices for your body. In the last year, I've made some big life choices and huge lifestyle changes, and I couldn't be more happy with myself. Awesome stuff. Seeing Haley drop all that weight almost makes me want to make some changes myself, as it’s not a good look getting super winded every week at beer league softball. I look like a goddamn Molina brother on the basepaths these days.
The newlyweds are currently celebrating their honeymoon in New Zealand, and I sincerely hope that my boy Matt is getting it in early and often. What a lucky son of a bitch.
