When Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz got in the octagon at UFC 202 they delivered one of the most memorable fights in UFC history. But beforehand they also had a wild water-bottle slinging brawl at a pre-fight press conference. Today, the Nevada State Athletic Commission announced that they’re fining McGregor $150,000 for his role in the sh*tshow brawl.
The $150,000 is 5% of McGregor’s record $3 million purse for the fight. The commission initially wanted to fine McGregor $300,ooo because there is a precedent of levying 10% fines for pre-fight tussles, but ultimately decided that was too hefty a fine considering nobody was seriously injured.
McGregor will also have to do 50 hours of community service as part of his punishment. For someone with millions of dollars, that might be the more frustrating part of the punishment.
The pre-fight brawl certainly helped promote the fight, and after beating Diaz, McGregor is set for another huge payday for his UFC 205 clash with Eddie Alvarez. So it’s doubtful he’s too shaken up by this penalty. The Irishman sent out the following tweet this afternoon:
Nate Diaz was scheduled to likewise have his hearing for the incident today, but it has been postponed.
