According to one source, some University of Wisconsin-Madison students are trying to sell a couple of different hoodies with varying aggressive messaging written on them, one of which reads “All White People Are Racist.”
The owner of the store is Eneale Pickett, a first wave poet who has a store on Etsy. Eneale is also a sophomore at UW-Madison and has been reportedly DM’ing people on Twitter trying to get some attention to his products. Apparently he hasn’t been doing that good a job closing out on sales because as of right now, he’s only sold one “All White People Are Racist” hoodie. As for his explanation as to what it means, read his words:
“Racism has little to do with hatred and mostly to do with who has power,” the page says. “White folk or those who see themselves as white are given said power inherently regardless of socioeconomic class, education etc. This is why white men created race in the first place–to maintain power. Racism gave birth to the idea of race.”
Last time, I checked that wasn’t the definition of racism that I learned in school, but whatever. This guy knows exactly what he’s doing–spreading hate and trying to divide people. I don’t for one second buy into his whole shtick, but whatever.
My only point is this: if I’m a white student at UW-Madison, I’m buying this shirt and wearing it around campus. Taking back the night. That whole thing. But instead, I’m here in NYC and wearing something like is bound to start some sh*t I don’t want to be a part of.
Obviously this guy is hoping that his controversial messaging gets some national attention, so I feel kind of stupid for helping him out, but honestly this is going to be a story whether or not we cover it. His store also has sweatshirts with words like “If I encounter another cop with a GOD COMPLEX I’m going to have to show the world that they are human.”
So yeah, good job Eneale for being a part of the solution.
Also, for all the people who find this article through Facebook or whatever, that’s not a gang sign he’s throwing up, but a UW-Wisconsin sign. Which makes him even more of a fool for bringing his school into the thick of it.
