The 2016 season has been one that hasn’t gone the way that the Arizona Cardinals or San Francisco 49ers would have liked so far. Each team is 1-3 as they go into a Thursday night showdown in Santa Clara. Arizona wasn’t expected to be this bad this season while San Francisco is still rebuilding with a struggling quarterback. The Cardinals may have their own injury issues to deal with as Carson Palmer may not play in this game while the 49ers need better work from Blaine Gabbert. Here is a look at the matchup.
The Cardinals lost 17-13 last week at home to the Los Angeles Rams. Palmer got knocked out of the game last week and it may be Drew Stanton under center for this game. Palmer has passed for 1,150 yards, six touchdowns and five interceptions for the season. It is clear that Larry Fitzgerald has enjoyed the efforts of Palmer this season with 25 catches for 280 yards and three touchdowns while David Johnson has rushed for 300 yards and three touchdowns of his own. The defense hasn’t been great all season long but this is the week where they have to be great on the road against San Francisco.
The 49ers lost their third straight game with a 24-17 loss at home to the Dallas Cowboys. Gabbert has thrown for 728 yards, four touchdowns and four interceptions this season but is only averaging 178.8 yards per game through the air. Jeremy Kerley leads the team with 18 catches for 202 yards and a touchdown. Carlos Hyde is at 299 yards rushing and five touchdowns and is the clear focus point of the offense. Hyde needs a lot of help from Gabbert this week. The defense would like to see Stanton instead of Palmer and could have a big day if they get that wish.
