Some of the best games to grace this generation of hardware are nothing new. They’re games from the past that developers have rebuilt from the ground up, revamping the graphics and frame rate, honing the controls and bolstering with DLC and occasionally fresh content. Thanks to committed publishers and the impressive technology of new consoles, players get to experience some of the finest games ever created in their best forms ever.
Here’s a look at the best remastered games available right now:
5. Borderlands: The Handsome Collection
Publisher: 2K Games
Developers: Gearbox Software
Platforms: Xbox One, PS4
Combining the latter two games in the Borderlands trilogy — Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel — into one kinetic package, these heavily upgraded versions of both games provide tons of mission-based, open-world shooting and looting action. It would have been a shame if all the fun were left behind in the Xbox 360/PS3 generation, but the franchise lives on thanks to this collection.
4. Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection
Publishers: Sony Interactive Entertainment
Developer: Naughty Dog
Three of the best PS3 games are rounded up into a single package here, with the Uncharted series getting graphical upgrades to bring it up to the standard of the mic-dropping Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. You can play through the swashbuckling adventures with all the DLC add-ons, and revisit individual missions to replay some of the most fascinating shootouts and action movie-style set pieces.
3. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD
Platform: Wii U
The stunning launch title for the original Wii made its HD debut on the Wii U, and brought with it a ton of enhancements and added content. There’s an unlockable Hero Mode, in which the difficulty level is ratcheted up considerably, as well as a new ghost lantern item and in-game boosts delivered by Amiibo figure support. Even better, the boxed version comes with the coveted Wolf Link figure.
2. Halo: The Master Chief Collection
Publisher: Microsoft Studios
Developer: 343 Industrites
Platform: Xbox One
Hands-down the best value in any single bundle in this generation, the package comes with the four mainline Halo games, along with access to the offshoot Halo: ODST. Since the first two games in the series were released on the original Xbox, the visuals and sound are hugely upgraded. You also get online multiplayer and the accompanying episodic series that provides background to help you grasp the fiction of the expansive Halo universe and where each game stands in the canon.
1. Grand Theft Auto V
Publisher: Rockstar Games
Developer: Rockstar North
Platforms: Xbox One, PS4
Faster load times, better graphics and sound and more defined background textures make this an eye-popping revamp of an already impressive crime saga. A first-person mode, vastly expanded online offerings and a deeper weapon arsenal make this the definitive version of one of the finest games ever created.
