Publishers have saved many of their blockbusters for October, making for a spectacular — and expensive — month for PS4 fans. Two multiplayer-focused shooters — Battlefield 1 and Titanfall 2 — will wage war for your dollars and attention, and those looking for a single-player saga will enlist with Mafia III. Skylanders Imaginators looks like a solid option for families and the young at heart, and PS4 players who coveted the previously Microsoft-exclusive Rise of the Tomb Raider will find their wait to play the game has ended.
Here’s a look at the best PS4 games coming out in October:
5. Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration
Publisher: Square Enix
Developer: Crystal Dynamics
Release date: October 11
After nearly a year of waiting, PS4 players finally get the chance to follow the continuing the rebooted adventures of a young Lara Croft, who is still making her way as a globe-hopping survivalist who is partial to filling her satchel with ancient valuables. Billed as a celebration of the series as a whole, the updated version includes previously released DLC and a slew of new missions and support for the upcoming PlayStation VR headset.
4. Skylanders Imaginators
Developer: Toys for Bob
Release date: October 13
After suffering something of a slump with last year’s vehicle-focused Skylanders SuperChargers, Activision looks to get back to the top of the toys-to-life genre with this innovative take on the genre. Instead of buying various action figures that will pop up as your in-game avatars, you buy elemental bases, then design your characters to your whims. Now that rivals Lego Dimensions is on hiatus and the Disney Infinity series has ended, it’s Skylanders‘ game to win or lose.
3. Mafia III
Publisher: 2K Games
Developer: Hangar 13
Release date: October 7
Taking a different spin on mob culture than previous games in the series, the setting this time out is 1970s New Orleans. You play as a disgruntled Vietnam vet who has a beef with the Italian mob. You round up your own confederacy of power players to take down underworld overlords and seize power for yourself.
2. Titanfall 2
Publisher: Eletronic Arts
Developer: Respawn Entertainment
Release date: October 28
The original Titanfall stuck with Microsoft systems, but the sequel is going multiplatform, allowing PS4 players to hop between supersuit-wearing soldiers who race around environments and the gigantic mechs they occasionally control. Most of the focus will be on online matches, which are expected to turn into frenzied battles of split-section reactions and measured strategy.
1. Battlefield 1
Publisher: Electronic Arts
Developer: EA DICE
Release date: October 21
Going a different direction than rival Call of Duty’s obsession with sci-fi enhanced future combat, EA DICE transports you back to the early 20th century to get in on some World War I action. Trench warfare, wobbly biplanes and field-shifting weather conditions are the order of the day here. Grab your helmet and musket and dig in for a brutal fight.
