It’s been a tough year for Wii U owners, with hardly any publishers — even Nintendo itself — bothering to release many games on the system. That changes quite a bit in October, with indies, third parties and Nintendo alike all giving Wii U owners something to look forward to. The heavy hitter in the bunch is Paper Mario: Color Splash, and Skylanders Imaginators also looming large. Intriguing smaller releases abound, led by Shantae: Half-Genie Hero and the quirky Disney Magical World 2.

5. Rocket Fist

This arcade-style robot battle game looks to be an apt fit for the Wii U, with its two-screen system that lends itself to frenzied asymmetrical multiplayer. Steam gamers have been eating this one up since May, and Wii U owners get to check it out before their PS4 and Xbox One-playing brethren.

4. Shantae: Half-Genie Hero

Sassy enchantress Shantae has made her home on Nintendo systems dating back to the Game Boy Color days, and she’s always remained a regular on the company’s handhelds and consoles. In her latest adventure, she makes her Wii U debut. Expect ample menu-juggling and command-issuing via touch-screen tapping.

3. Disney Magical World 2

A hit in Japan last year before getting a North America localization, this Disney-themed world builder looks to be a good fit for the Animal Crossing/Harvest Moon set. Build your village and increase your status by establishing routines and taking care of chores, allowing you to scoop up a flow of bonuses and trinkets to claim like trophies.

2. Skylanders Imaginators

Shaking up the toys-to-life formula, Toys for Bob is allowing players to design their own characters this time out. After picking up the $75 starter pack, you can craft heroes to adapt to demands of whatever challenges you face. Gone is the need to continue to buy new characters, although there will be element-categorized bases you will need to make characters who wield special attributes.

1. Paper Mario: Color Splash

Mario’s one-dimensional side-scrolling RPG-combat platformer side series finally makes its Wii U debut, bringing with it its trademark humor and charm. Expect the usual pop culture riffs and self-aware zingers that make it just as much fun to tap through the text-only cut scenes as it is to solve puzzles and collect items that allow you to advance to the next level.
