A 33-year-old Colorado old mother drowned while rescuing her two-year-old son who had fallen off the boat they were in.
Chelsey Russell, of Lakewood, Colorado, jumped overboard into Lake Powell in Utah to save the boy while her other family members tried to maneuver the houseboat. The heroic mother was holding the boy above the surface to save his life when after a few moments she was unconscious.
After Chelsey and the boy were brought back onto the boat, family members attempted to give her CPR on her to no avail. But her selfless act helped save her boy, who was hospitalized but has since been released.
Chelsey had worked as a lawyer in Denver. Her firm posted a memorial statement on its website on Thursday: ‘Chelsey was an amazing mother, an exceptional legal talent, an extraordinary athlete, a loyal and generous friend, and left us all better for knowing her. She is sorely missed.’
Chelsey is survived by her son, daughter and husband Ben.
This is tough news to digest because someone so courageous shouldn’t go so young . Chelsey’s bravery cost her her life and she deserves to be celebrated posthumously.
