Drake hosted Saturday Night Live last night, and the show had an actual highlight among a few strong moments. That’s unusual. Actually, the entire show was a pretty good showcase for the much maligned rapper who’s also still beloved from his days as a sensitive teen idol at DeGrassi High.
There was an opening monologue where Drake goofed on himself as a living meme, and the Rihanna impersonation was a fun dopey moment. He also showed off some great comic timing in plenty of uneven sketches. Also, the “Black Jeopardy” segment tried addressing the recurring bit’s own sad inherent racism.
But, of course, SNL also had to have Drake sneak up on Jay Pharaoh as the “Weekend Update” host did a Drake impersonation. There used to be a backstage SNL joke about an intentionally lame sketch called “The Sneaker-Uppers” that was supposed to have put an end to that. It seems the latest writing staff hasn’t heard the legend.
But internal troubles got a lot funnier with “Drake’s Beef” — in which Drake went to war over horrific backstage snubs by Pete Davidson, Leslie Jones, Lorne Michaels, Aidy Bryant, and an SNL cleaning lady. Quality stuff, and the first decent rap sketch on SNL in ages…
