After what seems like years of anticipation, next week will finally bring the theatrical release of the long awaited film Batman V. Superman: Dawn Of Justice.
Following the events of 2013’s Man Of Steel, fearing the actions of a god-like Super Hero left unchecked, Gotham City’s own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis’s most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will be the first live-action film to feature both Batman and Superman, as well as the first theatrical film to feature live-action portrayals of Wonder Woman, Aquaman, The Flash and Cyborg.
The film was announced at 2013 San Diego Comic-Con International, after the release of Man of Steel. Zack Snyder, director, and David Goyer, the writer, were both brought back in June 2013. Snyder stated that the film would take inspiration from the Batman limited series The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller, but that it would follow an original premise. It was also clarified that the incarnation of Batman in the film would not be related to the one in the previous Batman film trilogy, as many fans had hoped. The film’s official title Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was revealed in May 2014, with Snyder stated that having the “v” in the title instead of “vs.” was a way “to keep it from being a straight ‘versus’ movie, even in the most subtle way”. Henry Cavill later stated, “I wouldn’t call this a Superman sequel […] This is Batman versus Superman. It’s a separate entity altogether. It’s introducing the Batman character and expanding upon the universe, which was kicked off by Man of Steel.” Although the film originated as a sequel to Man of Steel, it was “revamped into a backdoor pilot for Justice League and/or an eventual stand-alone Batman movie.”
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice stars Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, Holly Hunter as Finch, a United States Senator, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, and Ezra Miller as The Flash.
