Tom Magliozzi of 'Car Talk,' RIP: You Probably First Saw Him As a Cartoon [VIDEO]

Tom Magliozzi of Car Talk–the popular radio show on NPR for people who didn’t even like cars–has passed away, and you might have first heard him as a cartoon on Arthur. That’s right. Tom Magliozzi (and his brother Ray) were real big deals during the ’80s and ’90s. In fact, they were two of NPR’s biggest stars. They had a big following among guys who liked cars, but an even bigger following amongst pioneering hipsters who wouldn’t get caught dead talking about horsepower. A lot of people just enjoyed the funny chatter between the two Boston-based brothers.
That included plenty of creative types, which is how Arthur the Aardvark ended up on the phone with a cartoon version of the Magliozzi Brothers. We guarantee that there were plenty of hipster parents who got a kick out of the NPR stars landing on the gentle PBS cartoon series. It’s a real tribute to Tom Magliozzi that he sounds so natural as a cartoon, too. Check out this vintage clip, and get an idea of the kind of loss that’s being mourned by your elders today. It might even sound familiar…
