Northern Illinois University may have just instituted the most draconian rules regarding Internet usage that we’ve ever seen in our lifetime. They don’t just prohibit students from accessing, uh, “adult materials.” The university also blocks students from using social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter.

The new policy applies to the school’s Internet connection only, something that students can access on public computers and their personal computers, tablets and mobile devices. The new restrictions specifically forbid any student from accessing any social media site including Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, Pinterest, LinkedIn, Foursquare and many others. The policy also prevents students from accessing Wikipedia or any porn sites even if they are using their computer or mobile device in the privacy of their own dorm room. Any student who tries to access any of these pages will be met with a blocker that reads “Web Page Access Warning,” and could face disciplinary measures for violating the school’s new Internet access policy which might even be un-American enough to ban COED.

So basically the only students that this is good for are the ones who may be preparing to do some work in North Korea or China where things like freedom of speech are just lost dreams never to be achieved again. We kind of get why they don’t want students to access Wikipedia because it’s an easy way to do research but banning social media is basically putting the brakes on the way people talk to each other now. How many study groups and extracurricular clubs organize their meetings and materials on sites like Facebook and Twitter? Why not just require every student to drive a horse and buggy to and from class everyday?
