Whataburger lead

It’s a very special day for the people who are lucky enough to have a Whataburger nearby–since the restaurant chain is celebrating their 64th anniversary today. That means that we’re now fast approaching 65 years of the Whataburger empire serving up 100% pure American beef on a toasted bun that was made to require two hands. There could have been no finer dream.

That dream’s paid off really well for college students, too. Whataburger began in Odessa, Texas, and the place remains a real refuge for college students all over the state. [UPDATE: The proud people of Corpus Christi, Texas--and Whataburger--want to make it clear that the chain's first location actually began in that fine town. Odessa was just the first to have the classic Whataburger A-frame design, which is still very important.]

Whataburger is a 24-hour refuge, too–and the restaurants aren’t afraid to fly the colors of local colleges, either. The location in College Station, Texas, for example, is proudly showing off some orange stripes.

There aren’t many burger places that will mess with their look just to show some school spirit, but Whataburger is different. The students sure appreciate that, too–and so we’re going to torture ourselves with some great images of Whataburger at its finest. We’re talking about quality food porn.

And it’s all pretty unattainable from our COED offices in Manhattan, which isn’t sophisticated enough to have a Whataburger. Now we’re thinking about going back to school for some Whataburger, and some Whatachick’n and maybe a Whatataco….
