We usually marvel at how old our COED birthday girls are getting as we start the day–but a lot of guys will be baffled to learn that the WWE Diva known as Sable is only 47 years old today. That’s because the WWE was still kind of stuck in the ’80s when Rena Mero came along to invent the Sable character. Sable sure built the WWE’s reputation in the ’90s, though. She became phenomenally popular as the WWE’s most successful sex symbol. [photo via...]
That was really summed up when Sable became the first WWE Diva to make the cover of Playboy. That very memorable April, 1999 appearance became the magazine’s best selling issue ever. Sable then began the only Playboy model to grace the magazine’s cover twice in the same year. That second September issue was another huge hit.
Unfortunately, that was also when Sable’s career took a big hit. Rena Mero would also become a pioneer in discovering how hard it was for a WWE Diva to make it into mainstream Hollywood. She sued the WWE over claims that they were trying to exploit her body, but was also soon baring that bod in extremely low-budget movies.
But the happy ending is that Sable fixed things up with the WWE by 2003, and returned to the ring for another long stint–and she still seems to be a welcome fixture in wrestling events. There’s a little nostalgia to most of these pics, but they’re a great reminder of the gal who proved that wrestling women could be mainstream sex symbols. Sable opened the door to the likes of Eva Marie, Aksana, Kaitlyn, Eva Marie, Michelle McCool, Paige, Layla, Alicia Fox, Cameron, Trish Stratus, and The Bella Twins.
