If you can’t wait to see The Expendables 3, you’re not alone because almost 200,000 people downloaded a pirated copy of the movie three weeks ahead of its release date.
Someone with access to a DVD quality copy of the upcoming action movie that’s jam packed with some of cinema’s most famous action movie stars leaked it on the Internet sometime last Wednesday. Apparently, a ton of people couldn’t wait to see the thing because it’s been downloaded over 189,000 times in just 24 hours meaning it’s bound to reach in the millions before the movie hits the theaters. So far, it’s not clear exactly who uploaded the movie first to a torrent file sharing site and Lionsgate is keeping very quiet about the incident.
Whoever did it could be in serious trouble. Back in 2011, someone uploaded an early copy of X-Men Origins: Wolverine to the Internet more than a month before its release date. The FBI arrested and charged Gilberto Sanchez in connection with the pirated movie and it earned him a year-long prison sentence. He uploaded it through the file sharing service MegaUpload run by the notorious Kim Dotcom that has since been shut down as part of a massive sting operation by the FBI and the Department of Justice.
It’s understandable why so many people downloaded the movie–it’s becoming a popular franchise. The last Expendables movies earned over $300 million and the new film is expected to do just as well. This early release, however, may put a crimp in those plans if the studio can’t stop its pirated dissemination in time. Hollywood loves a ticking time bomb scenario.
