There have been several female officials who have worked lower level sporting events without getting the chance to reach the big time. The Big 12 Conference is about to give one of those women a chance to see what she can do. The conference announced on Monday that Catherine Conti will be part of the officiating crew on Sept. 6 for Kansas hosting Southeast Missouri State. [lead image via Twitter]
Conti has been an official in the Southland Conference for a number of years. There is no reason why something like this doesn’t go on more often. Women have the same abilities that men do in calling a game. The stereotypes always seem to get in the way. Obviously, Conti has worked hard in the Southland Conference if the Big 12 wants her to come up and be an official for one of their games.
Maybe this will begin a trend and more female officials will find their way onto the field sooner than later. There have been others before Conti and more will come after her but maybe a lesson can be learned that some women know just as much about football as men do. Those answers will be found fairly quickly after Conti’s appearance on Sept. 6 in Lawrence.
