A film studio is finally working on a feature-length movie about video game icon Sonic The Hedgehog.
It’s been almost 23 years since we were first introduced to the little blue blur that saved the Sega Genesis from being swallowed up by Nintendo’s unrelenting competition. So it seems almost unthinkable that someone hasn’t at least tried to pitch a Sonic The Hedgehog movie. Now that Sonic has fallen on some hard times by failing to get another big game going, it appears that Sony, SEGA and company are trying to give the little guy a boost by giving him his own movie. Thankfully, they are sticking with an animated version, a lesson that the makers of the horrid Super Mario Bros. movie had to learn the hard way.
That means they won’t have to hire a super short actor and paint him blue to play the speed demon. So who should they cast to do the voice? They already have a couple of seasoned choices with experience as Sonic the Hedgehog. The current voice actor for the character is Roger Craig Smith who not only voices Sonic for all of his most recent games but he also got some screen time when Sonic did a cameo in Walt Disney’s Wreck-It-Ralph.
Here’s a name that you might be surprised to hear: Jaleel “Steve Urkel” White. The Family Matters star actually did the voice for the character when it became a cartoon character in the 1990s for three different animated series.
It would be nice if either of them got the chance to take on the role in the new movie. They know the character and gave him a voice that makes him more recognizable. However, Hollywood doesn’t care a lot about developing a character when money is involved. So they’ll probably cast a more famous name with a recognizable voice in the title role like Jonah Hill or TJ Miller in order to hedge their bets.
