It’s not a spoiler to say that LeBron James died during this current season of the Louis C.K. show Louie. It’s just a reminder that the F/X show is one sitcom that crams in plenty of jokes–in this case, making a great joke about how the news media values celebrity deaths over mere mortals, as the show’s fictional hurricane season claims LeBron. And, as the newscaster adds, “the rest of the Miami Heat, and 12 million other people.”
These news reports have been part of Louie‘s “Elevator” story arc this season–with the current twist involving (the fictional) Louie finally having sex with his Hungarian neighbor. That put an end to a great platonic romance. Louis has also featured a great extended metaphor throughout this look at Louie’s lousy love life. This entire season of Louie has been taking place during some serious hurricane weather, as seen by all these other snippets of television news coverage throughout the season.
Those news reports look pretty realistic, and they deserve the attention–since the reporters have provided plenty of great Louie moments. We’re pretty sure that all of the ecological disaster is meant to provide sharp contrast to the mundane problems of Louie, but these moments have some really brilliant ways of illustrating how the media (of Louie’s world) mirrors the contrast between regular problems and the spotlight that Louis C.K. puts on his own story.
And that sounds ike a thesis paper, so let’s add that these weather reports are funny as hell–or as funny as Louie’s hellish life, so check out some great television that might be missed as background noise….
