The over-the-top violence of the Mortal Kombat series is making its way to the next generation of video game consoles–as evidenced by this goretastic trailer for Mortal Kombat X.
The trailer found its way to YouTube today and it features two of the game’s classic fighters, Scorpion and Sub-Zero, going toe-to-toe in a forest of fire and ice using a series of deadly combo attacks and special moves. It’s definitely worth watching in high definition because every inch of the video is supremely detailed with rich environments, bright colors in patches of darkness and good old fashioned blood and gore.
It looks like they’ve added another fighting element to the game that lets players use parts of the environment to punish their opponent such as swinging from tree branches in order to more effectively kick their opponent in the face. The game was supposed to have its unveiling at next week’s E3 convention in Los Angeles but it appears that NetherRealm Studios decided they couldn’t wait that long to share it with their fans and we’re glad they did…
Of course, the real charm of the Mortal Kombat games is the ridiculous and unrelenting buckets of blood, grime and gore that it throws at the screen. The very first arcade game drew the ire of parents and video game activists who still believe that video game violence is to blame for real world violence. Thank God they completely lost that debate because the new game looks like it’s bound to be the bloodiest and most detailed Mortal Kombat experience yet.
