It’s no secret that a lot of Brazilian nationals are upset about the fact their country is spending billions of dollars on the World Cup when there are more pressing issues like crime, lack of infrastructure, and starvation. All you have to do is look at some of the murals and walls that street artists and graffiti artists have been painting to see the peoples’ reaction.
Earlier this week, a mural by Brazilian street artist Paulo Ito went viral. His work depicted a Brazilian child crying in starvation when the only thing for him to eat is a soccer ball. While Paulo’s work has gotten a lot of press, it’s just a small sampling of street artists’ reaction to the World Cup. Some protestors have painted extravagant murals that go so far as to call Pelé a sell-out, others are satisfied with just plastering “F*ck FIFA” all over the place.
Our guess is that the street artists are only going to get more and more active as the World Cup approaches–that was the case with the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics.
