It seems that biting someone’s ear is still one of the biggest draws in professional sports–and the latest bid for ear-chomping stardom comes courtesy of the Albuquerque Isotopes. That’s the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Triple-A team, and they seem to need some counseling over there, because veteran catcher Miguel Olivo bit off a chunk of rising star Alex Guerrero’s ear during a fight on Tuesday night. Now it’s reported that Guerrero will miss five weeks after needing plastic surgery to repair the ear. Did we mention these guys are on the same team? Yeah, so that’s even worse.
The Dodgers can’t be happy with this kind of thing. They paid Guerrero $28 million in the offseason to be their second baseman of the future. Now we have Olivo has now taking him out of action for at least a month. It’s quite possible that Guerrero would have got a promotion to the big league team soon , too.
It was a sad day for the Albuquerque Isotopes, and “Hungry Homer” wouldn’t be proud or have wanted to do his hunger strike for this to happen. There are going to be severe penalties for Olivo coming and he is likely out of a job. Guerrero now can only sit and watch for his ear to heal up.
