Michael Sam Oprah Winfrey

The Michael Sam story has had all kinds of twists and turns during the recent Draft Days–and now we get more drama with the Oprah Winfrey Network set to air a documentary series following the life of Sam. (Did you know that he’s gay? It’s true!_ Cameras followed Sam during the draft, and will now follow him through training camp as he attempts to make the St. Louis Rams roster. It is a new dynamic to this story.

Obviously, this is a huge story that’s bigger than just the sports world. Sam was going to get a lot of media attention just from being the first openly-gay active NFL player in the league. The series is planned as six to eight segments–meaning it’s probably going to stretch into the regular season when the series is aired on OWN. If Sam was just looking to be known for his football ability, that’s likely out the window. His celebrity status could be a negative effect on the team, too. That’s if it becomes a problem with the cameras, although it’s also easy to imagine a lot of positives to the show. Right now, we’re mainly enjoying the idea of Michael Sam following in the footsteps of Lindsay Lohan.
