There are going to be a ton of people interested in buying the Los Angeles Clippers now that the NBA has banned Donald Sterling for life. There are a few likely suspects, but also a surprise contender in Floyd Mayweather Jr.. The boxer spoke to reporters covering his match on Saturday night, and said that he’s serious about an interest in the team. In fact, Mayweather says that he’s already talked with others about partnering up.
A lot of people are hoping that the Clippers will be sold to a black owner after Sterling’s racist comments. The NBA probably doesn’t care about what color the owner is as long as they have the money to buy the team. It would be great to have more black owners in the league, however, and Mayweather would be a fun presence in the league.
So we’ll see if Mayweather will end up buying the team–but it wouldn’t hurt to have some new blood in the owner fraternity. Besides, it’s only a matter of time before a new owner has the Clippers under their control. And if it’s Magic Johnson, people will be throwing around (fairly realistic) conspiracy theories straight out of House of Cards.
