The dissolving of The Mars Volta may have been a bitter breakup–but some of the group’s members have reformed into a new group, thanks to Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

A new project called Antemasque surfaced on YouTube that features The Mars Volta’s ex-members Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, Cedric Bixler-Zavala and drummer Dave Elitch meeting up in the studio with Flea to pound out some recordings for their new album. The video features the group members working out the riffs for their new song “4 AM” with more songs and details to follow on their Twitter page.

It appears that time has healed most of the wounds that led to their nasty divorce in 2013. Bixler-Zavala and Rodriguez-Lopez went their separate ways for awhile after Bixler-Zavala claimed that Rodriguez-Lopez’s move to form Bosnian Rainbows was taking focus away from Mars Volta’s music and their legions of fans–who loved songs like this….

Apparently, Flea stepped in to lend a hand to help make sure that their unique partnership didn’t completely fizzle away by joining the two in a new group with their old drummer Elitch. In addition to these groups, Flea is also a member of Atoms for Peace with Radiohead’s Thom Yorke, and this is what they’re sound like when they get together…

So we’re looking at some¬†complicated musical relationships. We need some kind of family tree-style chart just to be able to wrap our heads around it with all the breakups and collaborations with other groups like Bixler-Zavala and Rodriguez-Lopez’s other¬†former group At the Drive-In. Everybody remembers them, right? If not, here’s a tune–but it feels like we’re entering golden oldies territory now…
