If the events of the first Purge movie prevented you from getting a good night’s sleep for a long time, start stocking up on the Ambien now for the release of The Purge: Anarchy following the release of its first trailer.
The film picks up a few years after the original in a weird America where one night a year, the citizens are allowed to commit whatever crimes they want over a 12-hour period. This time, the crazies don’t get to run loose in a house to get their murdering ways out of their system. The few sane members of the movie venture out of their heavily fortified homes on the night of the great Purge for various reasons, and have to survive a hellish 12 hours.
Horror sequels usually suck hard, but this has some real potential. The first was such an interesting and unique idea for a thriller. It turned into your basic madmen-loose-in-a-big-dark-house thriller by the end of the movie, but The Purge worked the idea with a really interesting concept. Now a whole new host of victims are set loose in a city full of crazies. Even the trailer has a great twist ending that shows a whole new kind of crazy person: the crazy person with a butt-load of money to spend and no laws they can break. So it’s a not-so-subtle allegory about Wall Street’s encroachment on the lower classes’ fundamental rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That, or the Lindsay Lohan story.
