Every professional sports team tries to cash in on Star Wars. Now we have the Durham Bulls– the Triple-A affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays–hosting a Star Wars Night on May 4 where the team will wear R2-D2 uniforms. It is a novel concept that will likely fill the stadium up.
May 4th, of course, is an unofficial holiday for Star Wars fans because the line “May the force be with you” sounds kind of close to saying the date May 4th. Other teams have done this for years with teams wearing uniforms that looked like Darth Vader or Chewbacca or just this month when a minor league hockey team wore jerseys that have the faces of George Lucas, Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia on them. Professional baseball teams have been involved for years too like the San Francisco Giants, who will give away R2-D2 beanie hats at a game this year.
The franchise is still popular nearly 40 years after the first Star Wars movie was released. It is something that will never go away and teams are doing a great job continuing to embrace it. The Bulls after their game will auction the R2-D2 jerseys to benefit the Autism Society of North Carolina.
