Sony is finally hard at work on another Oddworld game and rather than try and top an already perfect series of sidescrolling games, they are going back to the original with a next-generation remake of the game that started it all.
Sony made their announcement with the release of a new gameplay trailer for Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty, a remake of the PSOne game Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee with new 3-D graphics for the PlayStation 4 and newly remastered music and sound.
The game puts players in control of its hapless hero Abe, a Mudokon born into a life of indentured servitude who is forced to work for a brutal food-processing corporation. One day, he discovers that the company plans to slaughter his kind to reinforce their dwindling supply of Meech Munchies and Scrab Cakes. So he plans an escape and accidentally learns of his mission to save his enslaved brothers before they become an unnecessary part of the food chain.
The game was one of the first to have multiple endings depending on how many slaves and servants you freed before you got to the final stage. It also has a nice mix of sidescrolling action and challenging puzzles as the players lead their freed brethren through the bowels of the plant towards freedom. We’ve been waiting for a new game in the Oddworld line since the excellent sequel Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath hit the Xbox and PS3 but taking the game back to its roots might give gamers another reason to remember what they loved so much about the original and demand a brand new game for the next-gen console generation.
