Afflicted is the latest movie to get a big buzz going on the indie film festival circuit–as a found-footage movie about a friend who contracts a scary illness that gives him superhuman powers, and then slowly takes over his body. Here’s the first trailer that should get a buzz going. Or maybe some complaints that it looks like a mix between Chronicle and an amateur parkour blooper video.
The movie’s stars (and directors) Derek Lee and Clif Prowse play best buddies who set out to find the ultimate adventure in the world. That explains why they’re traveling around the globe and documenting the entire trip with handheld cameras. One friend has what appears to be a serious seizure, and then seemingly returns to normal health as they continue on their journey. That’s before the two notice that the recovered guy can now run at ridiculous high speeds, jump off buildings, and even punch through solid concrete.
It’s a horror film, though, so his behavior becomes more erratic and scary as he gets sicker, and they must find out what caused his illness and how they can stop it before it gets any worse…
We’re buying into this as an interesting mix of gripping action and serious horror. Now the movie just has to accomplish both while managing a first-person perspective. We’re hoping that it’s done right. Found footage has kind of become a joke, but Afflicted hints at how it can still be unnerving.
