Beavis and Butt-head and King of the Hill creator Mike Judge has been hard at work on his first non-animated TV show for HBO. They just released the first trailer for Silicon Valley.
Judge has gone back to the roots that made him such a unique, cult icon among film buffs and TV heads after failing to relaunch Beavis and Butt-head and his infamous fight with the studio heads over the theatrical release of Idiocracy. He’s come up with a clever idea that combines the emotional drudgery of the characters from Office Space with the die-hard business world of The Social Network. Richard, played by Thomas Middleditch, moves into the house of tech millionaire Elrich, played by T.J. Miller, to develop the next hot piece of software for the digital age and suddenly finds himself in a massive bidding war for his compression algorithm. Rather than bow to the six figure checks thrown at him by the big league ball players, he decided to form his own company to create and sell his digital creations along with characters like Dinesh, played by Kumali Nanjani, and the gruff Gilfoyle, played by Freaks and Geeks’ Martin Starr.
It was inevitable that HBO and Judge would hook up since it gives him more creative freedom to do the kind of humor he’s best at that would never pass the smell test of the carefully scripted and focus-tested world of network television. This partnership feels like it will be a perfect fit and that it should have happened sooner but we’ll take what we can get.
