The long awaited return of Thief to the video game came one step closer to becoming a reality thanks to the release of a new trailer.
Square Enix, the studio that’s finally trying to reboot the long, long stealth action game franchise, released the first, full-length trailer that explains some of the game’s story and even shows some enthralling footage of what we’ll be playing when we get the final product at the end of the month. Thankfully, the new Thief hasn’t strayed too far from its roots. It’s still an old world style action/adventure in which a master cat burglar fights between political corruption and the will of the people by stealing valuable artifacts and tokens of power. However, they seem to have added a fun, first person parkour puzzle element to the mix, a style that’s been used with mixed results in groundbreaking titles like Mirror’s Edge and not-so-groundbreaking ones like Dishonored.
Of course, we’ll never know for sure just how good all of these game elements are until we actually get to the play the thing when it’s released on Feb. 25. However, this trailer looks like the start for something promising for the newly revamped franchise. It’s got a gripping story, unique gameplay and plenty of dark ambiance. It feels like the start of something new, even if it’s reviving an old franchise. It’s like the start of Assassin’s Creed before publishers ran into the ground with an endless series of rushed and unnecessary sequels.
