It’s been a busy week for the Guardians of the Galaxy–with the upcoming comic-book movie being one of the few projects willing to battle the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue for eyes on the internet. Marvel Studios is on a winning streak, though, and they probably know how to promote an upcoming film that’s one of the most baffling moves in their history.
Nobody was expecting a Guardians of the Galaxy movie when the project was announced during the hype for The Avengers. The sci-fi superhero team were never major Marvel characters like Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, or Captain America. So now the marketing geniuses at Marvel (that’s not sarcasm) are rolling out a series of introductory videos today–each one spotlighting a character from the film. That’s in the wake of the first official Guardians of the Galaxy trailer released earlier this week.
We’re starting with the character of Rocket Raccoon–who’s a raccoon. A space raccoon. A pretty blood-thirsty one, too. Then go on to meet Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel), Drax (played by Dave Bautista), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), and Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord (Chris Pratt).
The whole universe of the Guardians of the Galaxy gets really complex, and we expect that there’ll be a similar roundup of the movie’s villains in a few days. In the meantime, this seriously geeky movie (directed by the seriously geeky James Gunn) is a nice antidote to today’s casting news on the latest Fantastic Four reboot. Not that we’re complaining about Kate Mara. We’re also just geeky enough to really admire how much Rocket Raccoon looks like a real raccoon in this video…
