Lauren Duke University Porn Star

[Update: Here is "Lauren's" own blog in response to the attention she's received today.]

There’s a freshman who’s a porn star at Duke University, and she’s causing a commotion. That’s because we’re talking about Duke University. It’s not so uncommon for students in Southern California to do porn work on the side. We’ve met college gals who go to school during the week in the Midwest and fly to L.A. to shoot porn on weekends. Duke University, however, is an elite institution. This kind of thing is not supposed to happen there.

And so the Duke campus is abuzz about “Lauren,” who has provided an interview for the Duke campus paper The Chronicle–running, romantically enough, on Valentine’s Day. The article is a rambling piece by a Duke student named Katie Fernelius. She understands the porn industry about as much as one could expect from a campus reporter at Duke University.

That includes Katie having a certain gullibility about the earning potential of a porn starlet. We don’t doubt Lauren’s skills, though. We’ve seen the starlet in action, and the 18-year-old deserves to have started out in upscale productions. In fact, Lauren has already joined James Deen’s long list of co-stars, although the actress seems really fond of working with ladies.

We’re going to keep calling “Lauren” by her pseudonym, too–even if everyone on the Duke campus already knows the gal by both her real name and porn alias. We’ve talked to Lauren ourselves and promised her some anonymity. We’re keeping that promise even as Lauren’s own Twitter account stays busy with spreading her pictures all over the internet.

And at least she’s in control of that, because Lauren sure doesn’t like that Chronicle article. “I’m a bit wary of journalists,” she told us, and didn’t mind going into detail: “I spoke with my school’s newspaper, and they completely misquoted me and made me look like a dumb attention-seeking bimbo.”

Duke

So keep that in mind as this Chronicle article makes the rounds. It’ll explain an awful lot of contradictions.

For example, Lauren’s Twitter account proclaims her to be a “Nymphomaniac/Rising Porn Star.” We like that “rising” as both a nod to her college career and Lauren’s declaration of intending to be in the biz for a while. She’s also used the account to respond to slurs from Duke students with the famous Gandhi quote that claims, “‘First they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they fight you, then you win.”

In contrast, here’s a Lauren quote from the Chronicle article: “I feel angry. I feel victimized. I feel harassed. I feel hated. I feel discriminated against. At Duke, I can’t be who I want to be. I really wish I could just do porn and pay for my college and not get s**t from people and just be respected as a human being, but clearly that’s not going to happen.”

That Chronicle article also has Lauren saying, “If I could do it again, I don’t know if I would’ve done porn.” We’re really not getting that feeling from Lauren’s Twitter account.

We’re wishing the best for Lauren under any circumstances. We’re hoping that when she wins in the Gandhi tradition, it involves a cushy faculty job in  Women’s Studies, and maybe steady work as a speaker touring college campuses. And as a personal message to Lauren: Let us know if you ever work for Girlfriends Films and do a scene with Faye Reagan. We can promise that we’ll get every detail of that shoot down without a single misquote.
