A new trailer for 300: Rise of an Empire is storming the internet. It’s the follow-up to 300, of course, where director Zack Snyder helmed a fantastically-stylized tale of ancient Sparta that got everyone ranting “Tonight, we dine in Hell!” Yeah, that was way back in 2007–so it’s a good thing that Rise of an Empire isn’t exactly a sequel. That is, in the usual sense of taking place after the events of the first movie.
Instead, 300: Rise of an Empire is a parallel saga that goes on before, during, and after the bombastic battles and hellacious heroism of the original blockbuster. Only it’s bigger, and boasts hottie-for-the-ages Eva Green adding divine beauty to the tidal waves of human brutality. Plus (at least in the preview) there’s “War Pigs” by Black Sabbath!
The trailer opens with brawny footage of men and women (and horses) of war gearing up for the carnage they commit best. Game of Thrones’ super-stunner Lena Headey, as Queen Gorgo, mourns the death of her husband and his brave army of 300 Spartan soldiers that took on one million Persians. The new titan in town, Themistocles (Sullivan Stapleton), announces Sparta’s next immediate plan of action to her majesty: “Avenge him.”
A rousing, rip-roaring montage of battle action ensues, and the moody orchestral soundtrack music gives way while the aforementioned heavy metal classic swells up to full power. Eva Green, as Persian naval commander Artemisia, scorches the screen as she purrs, “The ecstasy of steel and flesh, sweat and muscle and rage. War!”
300: Rise of an Empire opens March 7 in theaters everywhere, including some with Imax 3D. Yes, that means Eva Green in Imax 3D. Grab your broadsword and get ready.
