Hollywood actor and professional crazy face Nicolas Cage turns 50 years young today. He has one of the, shall we say, more interesting careers in the movie business. We say “interesting” because it’s hard to imagine that anyone would ever get another chance to work after that hilarious Wicker Man remake.
Of course, Cage is not his original name since he changed it early in his acting career from Nicolas Coppola, a name he shared with his famous uncle Francis Ford Coppola. He changed it to avoid the perception of favoritism of his famous name after scoring a tiny part in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Of course, he went on to score several memorable roles in such critically acclaimed movies as the Coen Brothers’ Raising Arizona, Moonstruck, Peggy Sue Got Married, Wild at Heart and Leaving Las Vegas, the latter of which earned him his own Academy Award win for Best Actor. He was even in a strange foreign commercial.
Sadly, he seems to have gotten less picky about his choice of movie roles with a string of bad action flicks that can barely crack a dent in the box office like The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, Season of the Witch and Drive Angry. His turn in a remake of the classic horror film The Wicker Man is so legendarily bad that it’s also one of the greatest unintentionally funniest comedies of all time.
Frankly, there is no better to celebrate the birthday of a man who has become one of the world’s most famous Internet memes then by overloading your Internet connection with a ton of wide-eyed GIFs.
