A new teaser trailer reveals that Showtime is planning to plant some darker roots on its primetime lineup this spring. The upcoming series Penny Dreadful will give a new spin to Gothic horror classics like Frankenstein, Dorian Grey and Dracula by threading them together for their upcoming horror series.
The show gets its name from the horror serials sold in 19th century England that told very lurid, dark and disturbing tales. According to the series’ production blog, many of these tales served as inspiration for the modern horror classics that have lived to the modern day such as Bram Stoker’s Dracula. It was inspired by a famous penny dreadful called Varney the Vampire--and the series has obviously been inspired by the Alan Moore comic series The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.
Showtime’s series will attempt to weave together some of the origins of the classic Victorian horror stories in its eight-episode series. Showtime has put together a huge cast to make the show work that includes such familiar names as Josh Harnett, Billie Piper and Harry Treadaway to play Dr. Victor Frankenstein. It sounds like it’s going to be a giant mashup of all the world’s most classic and darkest horror tales in one long series that delicately threads them all together for our twisted amusement. If you think about it, it’s been awhile since the pay cable channels have had a really good horror show that doesn’t have to hold anything back to amuse the censors since HBO cancelled Tales from the Crypt. So if you’re a fan of dark tales of death and despair, then you’ve got a reason to be happy in the spring.
And, yes, that’s Eva Green all dour in this video–so here are some more cheerful shots to give you another reason to tune in….
